GMDSS
Written by Adam Lincoln

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, or GMDSS for short means that Search & Rescue authorities ashore, and shipping in the immediate area of the casualty vessel, will be alerted to a distress situation more rapidly enabling the implementation of  a Search & Rescue operation as quickly as possible.

The GMDSS system also allows transmission of Maritime Safety Information (MSI), navigation and weather warnings as well as other urgent safety information to ships operating in the same area.

GMDSS works with various communication technologies including;

  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
  • NAVTEX
  • INMARSAT
  • SART
  • EPIRB
  • VHF
  • HF
  • MF

Distress and Safety Calling is automated so keeping watch on voice and morse frequencies are no longer required. By pushing buttons a ship can send its identity, position and nature of distress by satellite or terrestrial means. A shore based Radio Co-ordination Centre, or RCC, will then alert vessels in the area to go to the aid of the casualty vessel.

Under the SOLAS 1974 system, ships were required to monitor and respond directly, this is now the responsibility of RCCs.

Routine and Safety radio operation is now automated making it possible for ship’s to deal with all incoming and outgoing radio communication. It also means that it is no longer necessary to sail with a specialist radio officer on board.
