2nd round of Coastguard strikes
Written by Adam Lincoln

Dates have been confirmed for the second round of Public and Commercial Services Union members strike

Members of the union who operate in Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres (MRCC's) around the United Kingdom coastline are taking the action in respect of their pay claim.

The dates, listed below, will be a series of 24 Hour at 19 centres by Coastguard watch assistants. .

Action dates :

"emergency only calls"  cover begins on the morning of Tuesday 8th April

Friday 18th April sees the first  24 hour strike commence at 07:00

a further 24 hour strike starts at 19:00 on Wednesday 23rd April.

The action is taking place because staff believe they are not being paid enough for the work they do in planning searches and responding to 999 calls.

The Coastguard Rescue Teams around the coast will still be on call and are not affected by the strike action due to the fact that they are not full time staff but people who give up their own time to carry out the requests of the watch room staff.

It has to be made clear though, that this action will not affect the operational duties or readiness of the RNLI lifeboat stations around the coast of the UK and Ireland as the MCA and RNLI are two completely different entities.

I can't see why they think they should get the same as a fire-fighter, for
example, they sit in an office don't they?

Interesting comment... obviously knows nothing of the role of HMCG, or that of
the Coastguard Officer. The lowest grade, for example, having gone through a
written application, a sift, various aptitude tests and an interview. Still has
9 months training, a task book and a lot of exams to complete. And remains on
minimum pay.
And no, I dont sit in an office, please feel free to visit.

Hi Gerry, why don't you register as a member on the site and post an item
about the role of a Coastguard Officer to let our site visitors
know about your situation?
We need people like you on here to explain
what goes on behind the scenes of a rescue operation!
